Jan De Nul Group welcomes President of Ghana in Takoradi port

On 4 December His Excellency John Mahama, president of Ghana, visited the Jan De Nul Group worksite for the official sod-cutting of the Takoradi Port Expansion Project. This project will take 3 years to execute and foresees in the construction of 1.1 km of additional breakwater, the port deepening up to -14m/-16m and the construction of a 300 m long and 16 m deep bulk quay wall, the company said in its press release.

Since the signing of the contract at the end of 2012, Jan De Nul Group has successfully completed the design of the entire project, has mobilised more than 50 pieces of heavy equipment and has started up the quarry activities in order to produce the 2.5 million tons of rock required for the project. With some 10% of this volume now available on the stockpile area inside the Takoradi port, this was the right time for the president to formally give the go ahead for the works. Apart from the president himself, also former President Mr JJ Rawlings as well as the Minister of Transport and the Minister of the Western Region were present at the opening ceremony. After the obligatory speeches and some local cultural heritage, the President gave the crane operator of Jan De Nul Group the instruction to lower the first 6 ton rock into the water. The official part of the opening was thereafter completed with a short tour in the Takoradi port on board of the Ghana Harbour and Port Authority tug boat. At the end of 2014, the Cutter Suction Dredger 'Leonardi da Vinci' is expected in Takoradi to start the dredging works.
