    RS holds commemorative meeting of the Presidium of the Scientific and Technical Council (photo release)

    A commemorative meeting of the Presidium of the Scientific and Technical Council yesterday, December 12 was held at the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) on the 100th anniversary of the classification organization, the IAA PortNews correspondent reported.

    "Our organization is recognized internationally and is a full member of the International Association of Classification Societies. RS is a recognized organization of 70 maritime authorities of foreign countries," RS General Director Sergei Sedov said opening the meeting.

    He gave credit to scientists, partners (research institutes and design organizations), the Scientific and Technical Council of the Register: the Bureau and its specialized departments, for their contribution in the international recognition of RS.

    "Currently, the Register class accounts for 4294 vessels of 16 DWT under RS class, including 556 tankers and chemical tankers, six gas carriers and five nuclear-powered icebreakers. Today there are 41 projects under consideration, including a series of four membrane-type LNG carriers, a multipurpose 60MW nuclear icebreaker and other nuclear icebreakers", said Sergey Sedov was quoted as saying.

    The RS head announced the institution of an annual Award named after Konstantin P. Boklevsky (one of the founders of the Register, the famous Russian naval engineer) for the best scientific development implemented in the rules of the Register. "I hope you will take the most active part in it", Sedov told the Council members.

    "Rosmorrechflot being the largest state customer for the construction of the icebreaker fleet, salvage fleet, works permanently in conjunction with specialists of RS", said the deputy head of the Federal Agency of Maritime and River Transport Yuri Kostin.

    According to him, the unique new vessels being built today by the state order could be created only with the use of scientific developments of RS and only under the supervision of the organization.

    "One of the distinguishing characteristics of RS specialists is their highest professionalism. A person needs good tools so he could show his best qualities. Such tool is the rules of RS, that were developed with the efforts of the scientific community," said Yuri Kostin.

    During the meeting, the RS head conferred several awards on the Council members and introduced Andrei Grigoryev, a new chairman of the Electrical Equipment and Automation of Vessels depatement.

    The meeting of the Presidium of the Scientific and Technical Council (STC) is a scientific forum that convenes annually more than 30 scientific, educational and design companies, shipping companies and shipyards to summarize and identify plans for the formation and implementation of high standards of maritime safety.

    The Presidium consists of the most authoritative industry experts, including a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, more than 50 Doctors of Sc. and more than 80 Candidate of Sc.

    Scientific and Technical Council identifies priorities for the development of innovative projects of RS. There are more than 300 scientists and specialists work in the STC' 15 departments, from research institutes, design and project offices, higher education institutions, including the Central Research Institute "Prometheus" CRIMF, Krylovsky State Research Centre, St. Petersburg MTU, Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping, Marine Engineering Bureau, Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering.
