“This represents a 9% fall. This can be explained mainly by the lower revenues from seaport dues due to a decline in cargo handling as a result of the economic crisis,” it said.
It added that its financial position was “solid enough to cushion the downward trend in results” and to allow the continuation of its investment programme.
At the end of July it was reported that bunker demand in the port was down some 10% year-on-year in the first six months of 2009.
The Port of Rotterdam was reported as confirming that ship traffic through the port dropped by some 8%.
Hans Smits, the Port of Rotterdam's CEO, said at the time that he he expected throughput to stabilise in the second half of the year.
