Flagship icebreaker LK-60 to have Transas navigation systems
JSC USC-Transas (a joint venture of United Shipbilding Corporation and Transas Group) and Baltiysky Zavod-Shipbuilding (part of USC) signed a contract to supply the LK-60, flagship of a series of new generation nuclear-powered icebreakers of Project 22220 with a package of navigation and communications systems, Transas said.
Construction of the universal nuclear-powered icebreaker is underway at the Baltiysky Shipyard. The vessel ordered by Atomflot will have 8 Ice class notation to sail in the 3-meter-thick ice. The LK-60 features advanced dual-draft capability, which makes it suitable for operations both in the Arctic waters, and in the mouths of the northern rivers. The icebreaker will be operating in the western region of the Arctic, the Barents, Pechora and Kara Seas and in shallow waters of the mouth of the Yenisei and the Ob Bay.
Transas will supply and install radio and navigation equipment and the bridge control panel, meteorological and steering control system. The navigation equipment was tested for operation in adverse weather conditions in the Arctic.
The package will be delivered to the shipyard by 2016, and then Transas specialists will begin assembly and installation of the equipment for sea trials. Under the turnkey contract the icebreaker is to be delivered to the Atomflot's Murmansk berth by the end of 2017.
The LK-60 Arctica was laid down on November 5, 2013. The icebreaker will be powered by two RITM-200 reactors of 175 MWt, which together deliver 60 MW at the three propellers via twin turbine-generators and three motors and will be the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the world.
Ship's specifications: LOA - 173.3 m, beam - 34 m, draft at DWL- 10.5 m, minimum loaded draft - 8,55 m, displacement - 33.54 tonnes.
