Nuclear icebreaker Yamal has accomplished icebreaking assistance to research vessel Akademik Fyodorov which lasted for 48 days, press center of FSUE Atomflot says.
The expedition was accumulating geophysical information on presence of oil-and-gas at Russia’s continental shelf beyond the 200-mile zone. The work was carried out within the framework of the state contract signed between JSC MAGE (Marine Arctic Geological Expedition) and the Department of Subsoil Resources Management at Continental Shelf and Global Ocean of the Federal Subsoil Resources Management Agency.
According to MAGE Director General Gennady Kazanin, the results of the research may lead to expansion of Russia’s continental shelf.
Andrei Smirnov, Deputy Director General on operation of Atomflot fleet, said that the results of the large-scale research along the entire continental shelf of Russia will be summarized by the year end.
The area under research was almost 350,000 square meters. The results will be used as a foundation for Russia’s application to UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.
