This month, Combi Terminal Twente (CTT) hopes to increase the frequency of the Rotterdam-Bad Bentheim rail shuttle from three to five times a week. CTT is also looking for a ‘permanent’ place in the vicinity of the German-Dutch border for the construction of a larger handling facility, covering around 15 hectares. The space in Bad Bentheim is limited to 1.2 hectares, Port of Rotterdam said in its press release.
Northwest Germany, in the direction of Osnabruck, is a particularly popular destination for containers. Previously, that area was only served from the port of Hamburg. Now, the route from the port of Rotterdam via Bad Bentheim is, according to CTT, a cheaper and faster alternative.
Currently, three-quarters of the containers which CTT transports still arrive by water in Hengelo and the remaining quarter is carried by truck. But if the success of the container train continues, CTT expects to be able to transport that quarter by container train.
