Rail cargo transportation by CIS countries down 2.5% to 1.51 bln t in Jan-Sep’14

Rail cargo transportation by CIS countries totaled 1.51 bln t in January-September 2014 (-2.5%, year-on-year), press center of Russian Railways cites the Company’s President Vladimir Yakunin as saying at the 61st meeting of the Council for Rail Transport of the CIS and the Baltic states held in Baku (Azerbaijan) on October 21.

Despite the decrease of loading, the average haul increased by 6.3% which resulted in 3.7% growth of total cargo turnover.

According to Vladimir Yakunin, considerable growth was registered in the sector of container transportation. In the 9-month period the network of CIS railways transported 19.4 mln t of cargo in large capacity containers (+11.8%, year-on-year).
