Admiralty Shipyards (Saint-Petersburg) lays down Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino submarines

Admiralty Shipyards (Saint-Petersburg) has laid down two submarines of project 636, Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino, press center of Saint-Petersburg Government says.

The ceremony was attended by the City Governor Georgy Poltavchenko and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of RF Navy Alexander Fedotenkov.

Submarines of the modified 636 projects feature enhanced (compared to previous projects) combat characteristics. 

Diesel-electric submarines Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino are the last submarines in the series of six submarines of project 636 being built for RF Navy. Novorossiysk, the lead submarine of the series, was delivered to RF Navy on August 22, 2014. The second serial submarine, The Rostov-on-Don, is undergoing the manufacturer’s sea trials. The Stary Oskol, the third submarine of the series, is undergoing the mooring tests. The forth submarine, The Krasnodar, was launched on February 20, 2014. 

Characteristics: NATO classification – Improved Kilo; surface speed – 17 knots; underwater speed – 20 knots; operational depth – 240 m; maximum dive – 300 m; cruising capacity – 45 days; crew – 52 persons, surface displacement – 2,350 t; submerged displacement – 3,950 t. 

Admiralteiskie Verfi OJSC (Admiralty Shipyards) is a key enterprise of shipbuilding, a centre of conventional submarine building of Russia. The shipyard is affiliated with the United Shipbuilding Corporation OJSC. At the moment the shipyard facilities are fully engaged. A number of contracts are being successfully implemented at the shipyard for domestic and foreign customers. Two series of submarines are under construction now: project 636.1 for foreign Navies and project 636.3 for RF Navy. Besides, the Igor Belousov rescue vessel with the deep-operating vehicle Bester-1 is being built by the Shipyard. The Company’s staff numbers 6,500 persons. In 2014, Admiralty Shipyards celebrates its 310-year anniversary.
