Port Metro Vancouver opens community office in Delta

Port Metro Vancouver President and Chief Executive Officer Robin Silvester, Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, and Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Bryce Williams took part today in the official opening of Port Metro Vancouver’s Delta Community Office, the company said in its press release.

Located in Ladner, the office is a place where local residents can learn about the port’s activities in their community.

“Delta is an important port community,” said Robin Silvester, President and Chief Executive Officer of Port Metro Vancouver. ”By opening an office in Delta, residents are able to interact personally with port staff, ask questions, get information and provide input on the port activities that take place in the area”.

A significant amount of port activity takes place in Delta. It is home to three major terminals: Deltaport, Westshore, and an auto terminal on Annacis Island, as well as to three major port-led infrastructure projects: road and rail improvements at Deltaport, a container examination facility at the Tsawwassen First Nation, and the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project. It is also the location of port-led habitat enhancement work and scientific research on the impact of trade-related shipping and operations.

Trade to and from Canada is growing, especially with Asia, and Port Metro Vancouver is responding in support of its mandate to facilitate Canada’s trade. Independent forecasts show that container traffic on Canada’s west coast will double over the next 10 to15 years. Even with recent and current improvements planned at Port Metro Vancouver and the Port of Prince Rupert, the region will still need more container capacity by the early 2020s.
