Cochin Shipyard launches Buoy Tender Vessel for the Director General of Light House and Light Ships
Cochin Shipyard Ltd, today, launched a Buoy Tender Vessel, which is under construction for the Director General of Light Houses and Light Ships, the company said in its press release. The ship was launched in the august hands of Smt Mona Trivedi, wife of Shri Vishwapati Trivedi, IAS, Secretary (Shipping), Government of India. Smt Mona Trivedi named the vessel “Indira Point”. The vessel was named in the honour and memory of 20 personnel of Department of Light Houses and Light Ships who lost their lives during the 2004 Tsunami.
This is a specialized multi-purpose ship which will be used for transportation and placement of Buoys in position at deep seas / recovering and mai ntenance of buoys / towing and mooring of light vessels / distress management / transportation of e quipment and materials in containers, for repair of light houses in remote islands. The vessel is Rolls Royce Marine UT 755 S design and is being built under the classification requirements of Indian Register of Shipping.
The Secretary was appreciative of the good work done by CSL and lauded the quality of work done by the workers. He also outlined the challeng es ahead in the Shipbuilding industry and identifie d construction of LNG vessels and dredgers as areas with huge potential in the future. Secretary also stated that a comprehensive shipbuilding policy is being formulated and would be announced shortly.
The contract for the construction of ship was signed in August 2012 and the contractual delivery date is 10 June 2015. The company is confident of delivering the vessel ahead of schedule. Presently , the yard has orders for 12 Fast Patrol Vessels and one Aircraft Carrier, apart from the Buoy Tender Vessel. In the year 2013-14, the yard continued to post excellent results with a net profit of ₹ 194 Crores and a turnover of ₹ 1637 Crores.
