Port of Gothenburg and eight shipping companies to join forces to increase the volume of paper and timber products

Companies at the Port of Gothenburg are working on all fronts to expand forest product volumes at the port, the company said in its press release.

The shipping companies involved in the marketing campaign are Stena Line, DFDS Seaways, CLdN, MSC, SCI Freightman, ACL, Unifeeder and K-Line.

The Port of Gothenburg is aiming to increase the volume of paper and timber products passing through the port. Dedicated forest product terminals and new rail solutions are now in place and closer collaboration has been established between the Port of Gothenburg, the shipping companies and other key players linked to the port.

"Stig-Göran Thorén, Senior Manager Business Development, said: "We have listened to and adapted to the demands of the forestry industry. We now have a great deal in place in order to offer the industry a long-term, sustainable solution. Our aim is to stimulate the expansion of Swedish forest product exports."

One of the latest developments is that the port is now equipped to receive sawn timber using conventional rail trucks.

There are already 25 intermodal rail shuttles operating daily between the Port of Gothenburg and various towns and cities throughout Sweden – from Sundsvall in the north to Åhus in the south. There are also several block trains that serve the port, such as the trains used for Stora Enso's paper exports.

Gothenburg offers the broadest range of services in the Nordic region, not only to destinations throughout Europe but also to other parts of the world. The port handles around 210 ship visits each week.

"By offering services to the whole world, every day, the forestry industry can consolidate its export volumes here at the port and create a cost-effective, sustainable logistics solution," Stig-Göran Thorén added.

Another advantage is the even balance at the port between imports and exports, ensuring that empty load carriers are always available.

The Port of Gothenburg and eight shipping companies will join forces to highlight and market the new potential for handling forest products at the port.

"We are working together to inform the forestry industry about our offers and services. Our aim is to provide a level of service that is as efficient and personal as possible. Transporting goods via the Port of Gothenburg should be straightforward and with no complications," said Stig-Göran Thorén.

The shipping companies involved are Stena Line, DFDS Seaways, CLdN, MSC, SCI Freightman, ACL, Unifeeder and K-Line.
