TSNII SET, affiliated branch of Krylov State Research Center, has won the tender for supply of the electric propulsion system for the new icebreaker which is to be built by the Admiralty Shipyards in Saint-Petersburg, press center of the Krylov Center says.

According to the plans of RF Navy, the first icebreaker will be built for the Northern Fleet. The ship is to be equipped with the 7MW electric propulsion system.

Project 21180 ship is a state-of-the-art icebreaker of the new generation based on the new electric propulsion principles, two 3.5 MW propulsion units and state-of-the-art power plant.

Major characteristics of Project 21180: displacement – 6,000 t, length - 84 m, beam - 20 m, breadth- 10 m, draught - 7 m, crew - 32.

In the future, the Ministry of Defence is going to build a series of 4 icebreakers under the programme on support fleet renovation.

The Krylov Center has also participated in elaboration of the conceptually new project of 110-MWt icebreaker-leader with enhanced icebreaking capability (up to 3.5 m) intended for ensuring round-the-year navigation on the Northern Sea Route. TSNII SET is also designing the electric propulsion system for this icebreaker.

Krylov State Research Center was set up in 1894 as Russia’s first model testing basin in the central part of St. Petersburg. It is a scientific research organization of the national shipbuilding sector focused on conceptual and workshop designs of naval ships, merchant vessels and offshore structures as well as on their operation and disposal.
