MPA hosts 18th Marine Accident Investigators Forum in Asia
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is hosting the 18th Marine Accident Investigators Forum in Asia (MAIFA) from 4 to 5 August 2015 in Singapore. The forum is organised to foster closer cooperation, coordination on maritime safety and to promote safety at sea amongst investigators from maritime administrations, the MPA said Tuesday in a press release.
Experts from 14 countries, namely Australia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, P.R.C, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom and Vietnam will converge to discuss and exchange views, ideas, and information on marine safety investigations.
During the two-day forum, participants will take part in discussions on a wide range of topics including application of human factors and legal challenges in marine safety investigations, as well as tour MPA's Port Operations Control Centre and the Singapore Maritime Gallery.
Mr Tan Suan Jow, MPA's Director (Marine) and Director (Shipping), who delivered an opening address today said, "We are honoured and delighted to organise and host the 18th MAIFA in Singapore. MAIFA provides a platform for participants to learn from one another best practices, use of the latest technologies, and participate in networking opportunities to foster closer cooperation and coordination on maritime safety."
MAIFA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of safety at sea and the prevention of marine pollution. The first informal meeting for Marine Accident Investigators Meeting in Asia was held in Tokyo, Japan in October 1998 and was attended by delegates from four investigation organisations with a view to exchange ideas on marine accident investigations in Asia. The meeting was developed in subsequent years into a more formal forum and more investigation organisations in the region have participated in the meeting.
