Training ship Smolny of the Baltic Fleet passes the English Channel

The training ship of the Baltic Fleet (BF) Smolny, which is returning to the main base of the Baltic Fleet after fulfilling the tasks of this training cruise, started to pass through the English Channel on October 26. According to the press center of RF Defence Ministry, Smolny is planned to arrive in Baltiysk on 29 November.

Upon arrival to Baltiysk the ship will be left by cadets of the Baltic Naval Institute, who participated in the cruise, the crew of Smolny will replenish the stock and after a brief mooring will put to sea for passage to Kronstadt.

The ship went out for the new training cruise on 3 September. During this time, the ship had already passed more than 6 thousand nautical miles. This long sea cruise of the training ship is held within maritime practice of cadets of the Russian Defence Ministry’s naval educational institutions.

Being aboard the ship future naval officers carried out the training program, including on signal communications and navigation. In total, the cruise was attended by over 300 cadets.

Training practice is planned so that cadets of naval educational institutions, regardless of profiling specialty during the cruise could study general ship disciplines and pass the corresponding tests, such as locating using astronomical methods and introduction of course detector amendments on luminaries, bearing hydrometeorological and service time watch.
