Cargo volumes at Port of Riga fell 2.5% in 2015 to 40.06 million tonnes

Freight throughput at the Free Port of Riga (Latvia) in 2015 totaled 40,55 million tonnes, or a 2.5% decline year-on-year, the Port Authority told IAA PortNews.

In the reporting period coal shipments fell by 2.7% to 14,528,900 tonnes, while handling of oil products increased by 3.3% to 10,537,300 tonnes, of wood pellets – increased by 23.7% to 643,600 tonnes. The volume of scrap metals dropped by 33.7% to 780,000 tonnes, of ore – decreased by 44.5% to 203,200 tonnes.

Container throughput also fell by 8.3% to 355,241 TEUs.

Passenger traffic declined by 28.7% to 526,243 people, including 69,164 cruise passengers (+ 13.7%).

Riga, Latvia based Free Port of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Western Dvina), The port encompasses 6.348 hectares, including 13,818-meter waterfront with berths max depths of 16 meters (ship draft - 12.2 m). Transit cargoes account for 80 percent of overall freight traffic moved to / from the CIS countries. In 2014, cargo throughput at the Port of Riga totaled 41,08 million tonnes.
