Scientific reasearch vessel AKKY enters service (photo)

AKKY, the ice class research vessel Baltic Workboats delivered last year to Kazakhstan customer “KazEko Project” has now been taken into full service, Baltic Workboats says in a press release.

The 31-metre ship was designed by Ukrainian Chernomorsudoproject to carry out various duties from oceanographic research to environmental monitoring on Kazakhstan territorial sea areas of Caspian Sea.

She features large work area for scientists on aft deck from where there’s a straight access to laboratory. The aft deck also includes A-frame, a 10-ton deck crane and a 1-ton trawling winch.

At the aft part of the vessel’s superstructure there’s a chemical-biological laboratory with workstations for scientists supported by a 6m2 storage room for scientific equipment. Forward end of superstructure contains crew mess room and galley as well as laundry facilities. Akky provides accommodation and living areas for total of 20 scientists and crew.  Her wheelhouse has great all-round visibility with direct access to foredeck.

Akky is powered by twin Volvo Penta D9MH marine diesel engines, each 261 kW at 1800 rpm, coupled with ZF marine gearboxes and 5-blade FP propellers. The vessel’s top speed is 12 knots while service speed of 10 knots grants an operational range of 1000 nm.
