Number of water transport accidents in Russia up 62% in 2015
In 2015, the number of water transport accidents increased by 62%, 91 lives lost, number of accidents involving fishing ships up 2.5 times (23 accidents resulting in 74 lives lost), Sergei Staritsky, acting head of the Federal Agency for Transport Supervision (Gosmorrechnadzor) said in his final report at the Agency’s Board meeting held today, March 22, 2016.
So called human factor caused 90% of accidents.
A combination of structural, operational and organizational violations made by a ship owner, coastal services and ship officers of the freezer trawler Dalniy Vostok lead to the accident in the Sea of Okhotsk which took lives of 69 crewmembers. The report on the investigation was provided to the Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS) of the International Maritime Organization.
In 2015 Gosmorrechnadzor considered and approved 30 safety declarations of navigational hydraulic structures (NHS). According to the report, the number of NHS in pre-accident condition declined by 9%, year-on-year; the number of NHS with poor safety level – by 15%.
The area of Gosmorrechnadzor responsibility covers over 5,000 t of business units.
