Freight traffic at the Latvian Port of Riga in January-April 2016 decreased by 12.8% compared to the same period last year to 12,267,000 tonnes, the Port Authority said.
In the reporting period handling of coal fell by 22.2% to 4,26 million tonnes, of petroleum products – by 14.7% to 3,3 million tonnes, while shipments of wood pellets jumped by 37.8% to 265,600 tonnes and of ore cargo – by 9.8% to 99,900 tonnes.
Container throughput also fell 2.3% to 123,878 TEUs. Passenger traffic increased by 9.6% to 145,866 people, including 1,485 tourists.
Riga, Latvia based Free Port of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Western Dvina), The port encompasses 6.348 hectares, including 13,818-meter-long quay wall with berths max depths of 16 meters and ship draft of 12.2 m. Transit cargoes account for 80 percent of overall freight traffic moved to / from the CIS countries. In 2015, the Port of Riga handled 40,055,800 tonnes of different cargoes.
