Yantar shipyard lays the keel of the second oceanographic research vessel of Project 22010 (graphics)
Oceanographic research vessel Almaz has been laid down today, June 9, 2016, at Baltic Shipbuilding Plant “Yantar” (United Shipbuilding Corporation, Kaliningrad), the shipyard told IAA PortNews.
Oceanographic research vessel Almaz is the second ship of Project 22010 to be built by Yantar Shipyard. The lead ship named Yantar was delivered to the Defence Ministry of the Russian Federation in May 2015. The contract for construction of ORV Almaz was signed with the Ministry of Defence in March 2016. The ship will be named Almaz after the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau which developed the design of Project 22010. The second oceanographic research vessel is to be delivered to the customer in 2019.
Oceanographic research vessel of Project 22010 is a ship with unlimited area of navigation. She is intended for the research of the global ocean waters and bottom. The vessel's equipment includes deepwater autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) Rus and Konsul, which can be used for search and rescue operations. The ship is 108.1 meters long with a displacement of 5,200 tonnes and a beam of 17.2 meters.
Baltic Shipyard “Yantar” based in Kaliningrad, Russia was founded on July 8, 1945 on the basis of a Koenigsberg unit of German’s Schichau Werft. Yantar Shipyard specializes in building and repairs of warships and civil boats. Throughout the years the Shipyard has built 160 warships and more than 500 merchant vessels. The Russian Government holds majority stake in the shipbuilding firm through Western Center of Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation.
