ABP takes innovative development category at Lincolnshire Energy Awards

ABP’s pioneering work in the renewables sector saw the company take the hotly contested Innovative Development of the Year category at the recent Lincolnshire Energy Awards, says ABP.

The awards ceremony, which was held at Lincolnshire Showground, saw representatives from businesses across Lincolnshire convene on the ground’s Epic Centre, to see awards presented in categories including Renewable Energy Installer of the Year, Sustainable Construction company of the Year, Student/Apprentice of the Year and Small/Medium Energy Business of the Year.

ABP won the Innovative Development of the Year Award for its work in supporting its renewable energy customers. Investments including dedicated biomass storage facilities built by Lincolnshire firm A Torn Construction, and new lock gates in Grimsby, which allow offshore wind operations and maintenance activity to take place around-the-clock, were singled out for praise from the judges.

ABP Port Manager Grimsby and Immingham Mike Sellers accepted the award on behalf of the company.

He said: “It was unexpected but it’s fantastic to be recognised for the work we do in the renewables sector and we’re grateful to the judging panel for giving us the award.

“Our approach to energy usage is twofold; not only are we continually innovating and investing to meet the requirements of our renewables customers and to attract new business to the region, we also ensure that any new facilities we build use a range of measures such as solar panels, LED lighting and rainwater collection to ensure they are as environmentally friendly as possible.”

A spokesperson for the judging panel said: “For this award the judges were seeking evidence of innovation within the energy sector. Associated British Ports provides vital and innovative port solutions to renewable energy providers operating across four local ports, which includes Grimsby.

“For example in 2015 it unveiled its £4 million purpose-built storage facility for biomass. The warehouse, built by a Lincolnshire construction company, includes a range of features that makes it the only one of its kind in the whole of the UK and which incorporates best practice and cutting-edge industry standards.

“An excellent example of innovative thinking and achievement.”
