Throughput of Klaipeda port rises 5.7% to 19.93 million tonnes in HI’2016

Freight volume handled at the Port of Klaipeda, Lithuania between January and June 2016 increased by 5.7% on the same period's figures and totaled 19.93 million tonnes, the Port Authority statistics said.

In June, transshipment of liquid bulk cargo increased by 21.4%, year-on-year, to 1.03 mln t, general cargo – down 0.3% to 2,800 t, loose bulk cargo – down 16.8% to 1.18 mln t.

In the 6-month period, the port was visited by 3,460 vessels (+5.8%, or 189 vessels, year-on-year) and 131,359 passengers (-5%, or 6,982 passengers).

State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. There are 17 stevedore companies, shipyards and other operators at the port, providing a broad range of services. Throughput of Klaipeda port in 2015 (including Butinge Terminal) rose 9% (y-o-y) to 38.44 million tonnes.
