Russian Security Council says no hot issues related to int’l law left unresolved in the Arctic
No international legal issues that could provide a pretext for unilateral actions have been left unresolved in the Arctic, press center of the Russian Security Council cites its Secretary Nikolai Patrushev as saying at the VI International Meeting of the Arctic Council member states, observer states and scientific community representatives. According to Nikolai Patrushev, more than 93% of all the Arctic resources are within the exclusive economic zones as a result of fruitful work of the Arctic powers.
“It is a great achievement. Russia will further apply a responsible approach when handling such issues. Two disputes that used to complicate the relations of Moscow with Washington and Oslo were settled through signing of bilateral agreements on delimitation of the maritime space, in 1990 and 2010. Our Arctic borders are now free of disputed territories. Political and legal basis has been laid for the development of polar space,” said the Russian Security Council Secretary.
