Freight volume handled at the Port of Klaipeda, Lithuania between January and August 2016 increased by 3.4% on the same period's figures and totaled 26.22 million tonnes, the Port Authority statistics said.
In August, transshipment of liquid bulk cargo fell by 21.9% to 669,000 tonnes. Handling of general cargo also increased by 5.3% to 958,000 tonnes, bulk cargo volume grew by 4.3% to 1.44 million tonnes.
In the 8-month period the port welcomed 4,496 vessels (+2%, or 90 vessels, year-on-year) and 264,925 passengers (+3.5%).
State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. There are 17 stevedore companies, shipyards and other operators at the port, providing a broad range of services. Throughput of Klaipeda port in 2015 (including Butinge Terminal) rose 9% (y-o-y) to 38.44 million tonnes.
