To support future seafarers and promote marine education in Latvia, scholarship of JSC “Latvian Shipping Company” (LSC) this year has been granted to seven students studying seafaring both from the Latvian Maritime Academy and from the Liepāja Maritime College who have withstood the competition of LSC and the “Vītols Fund” (“Vītolu fonds”). LSC says the total scholarship fund is 27’600 euros, and each scholarship holder will receive 300 euros a month throughout the academic year.
“The goal of granting scholarships is to provide material support to students, thereby promoting not only their growth but also growth of the marine education in Latvia. This year we have increased the scholarship fund and number of its receivers, as well as for the first time granted scholarship to students of the Liepaja Maritime College. It is important that the support to students has been useful, as proven by receivers of the first scholarships, and it has helped them become professional ship employees,” says Robert Kirkup, Chairman of the Management Board of JSC “Latvian Shipping Company”.
Scholarship holder of year 2015 Indra Annija Cekula from the Latvian Maritime Academy acknowledges that the received scholarship has helped her greatly in ensuring comprehensive studies, as that allowed to focus just on the process of studies. Indra Annija Cekula adds: “I would like to say a big thank you to JSC “Latvian Shipping Company” for the opportunity to be one of the scholarship holders. My wish to the next receivers of scholarship is to be aware that it is a big honour to be one of holders of the scholarships – don’t forget to be proud of it and never stop striving for new heights!”
Chairman of the Management Board of the establishment “Vītols Fund” Vita Deiķe has expressed gratitude and satisfaction that the number of LSC scholarships has almost doubled: “A big thank you to the company “Latvian Shipping Company” for the investment into Latvian education! We are glad that the number of scholarships is growing. We are truly happy for the young people who have won in the scholarship competition and can proudly call themselves holders of scholarship of Latvian Shipping Company.”
The scholarship could be applied to by last year students of Latvian higher education institutions with good and excellent grades, who have undergone internship on any ship under technical management of the LSC subsidiary “LSC Shipmanagement” Ltd for at least 4 months.
