On 25 January 2017, OJSC Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard, (part of United Shipbuilding Corporation) laid down a mine countermeasures vessel of new generation.

The shipyard says the new ocean going mine-sweeper named Ivan Antonov is the second serial ship to be built under the contract signed with RF Defence Ministry in April 2014.

The keel-laying ceremony was attended by Director General of SNS Vladimir Seredokho, Deputy Commander in Chief of the Russian Navy Victor Bursuk, USC President Advisor Victor Chirkov, representatives of the city authorities and designer, daughters of Ivan Antonov, Hero of the Soviet Union.

The mine countermeasures vessel was designed by Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau. The ship features the most advanced technology and naval architecture and marine engineering, the world's largest monolithic hull of fiber-glass plastic made by the vacuum infusion method.

SNS is the only shipyard in Russia to use this technology for hulls of such a size. Monolithic hulls fabricated from glass-reinforced plastic feature higher strength and survivability compared to steel hulls.  They also have lower mass and longer life cycle.

Victor Bursuk, Deputy Commander in Chief of the Russian Navy, commented: “This series of vessels will be in demand at all fleets of our country. I hope we will annually get two vessels starting from the next year.”

The Alexandr Obukhov, lead ship of Project 12700 series was delivered to the customer in December 2016.  The Georgy Kurbatov, first serial mine-sweeper was laid down on April 24, 2015. Keel-laying of the third serial ship is scheduled for February – March 2017.

Victor Chirkov, Advisor to USC President, emphasized the modernization which is underway at Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard. The new workshop is to be put into operation in spring. The upgraded facilities will be used for construction of both warships and civil vessels.

OJSC Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard, a part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, was created in 1912. The shipyard has built over 500 warships and vessels of 43 designs for the Russian Navy and foreign customers. Currently, the shipyard builds missile boats, trawlers, passenger and work vessels for various purposes and is about to start the large-scale construction of mine warships of the new generation for the Russian Navy and foreign countries.

Today, the shipyard is the leader of composite shipbuilding in Russia and the only plant in the country to build warships and civil vessels of 4 types of materials: composite materials, shipbuilding steel, nonmagnetic steel, aluminum and fiberglass. The shipyard has mastered the technology of building hulls of composite materials through vacuum infusion method.
