The volume of cargo handled in January 2017 at the Port of Azov jumped by 48.8% Y/Y to 462,000 tonnes, the local harbourmaster told the PortNews regional correspondent.
Port of Azov captain Vladimir Bragin said the growth was driven primarily by dry bulk and liquid bulk segment. In the reporting period, the port handled 269,000 tonnes of grain (+59.4%), 74,000 tonnes of oil products (+27.8%). The volume of coal dropped by 9.8% to 62,000 tonnes.
Cargo throughput at the port in the first month of the year increased by 46.1% to 453,000 tonnes. Exports grew by 21.9% to 339,000 tonnes, imports soared 2.5 times to 16,500 tonnes, coastal traffic jumped by 3.8 times to 98,000 tonnes. Monthly volume of transit cargoes (not handled a year ago) reached 8,600 tonnes.
The Azov port captain added that the robust figures were achieved thanks to better meteorological and ice conditions as compared with January 2016.
The Azov Port Harbourmaster Service in January 2017 year registered 124 arrivals and 125 departures (96 arrivals / 89 departures).
Port of Azov is situated on the banks of the Don river. It is the main gateway between the Mediterranean Sea with the inland waterways of Russia and the Caspian Sea, for freight flows to the central part of Russia, the Urals and Central Asia. The boundaries of the port's basin include the River Don from the 3151.0-km stretch, the Koysug River to the receiving Buoy No 1 of Azov-Don Sea Canal, including outer anchorage No. 6 and the Calancea bayou to Dugino stop-over point.
