AEC Governance Committee meets in Saint Petersburg
The second Governance Committee (GC) meeting of the Arctic Economic Council took place last week in Saint Petersburg, Russia, says official website of AEC. The AEC Governance Committee consists of one representative from each of the eight Arctic States and six Permanent Participant organizations of the Arctic Council.
The programme for the visit by AEC members to Saint Petersburg included a meeting with the City’s Governor, Georgy Poltavchenko, a visit to the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, as well as with other Russian businesses and institutions. The meeting was graciously hosted by Sovcomflot.
The Governance Committee also received a greeting from the Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sergei Lavrov, offering support to the work of the AEC.
At the press conference following the Governance Committee meeting the Chair of the Arctic Economic Council, Tara Sweeney, stated the organization’s appreciation for the contribution Russia provides to the Arctic Economic Council in the discussions and deliberations for making the Arctic a favorable place to do business.
Evgeny Ambrosov, Vice Chair of the Arctic Economic Council said:
“The meeting of the Arctic Economic Council in St. Petersburg came in the lead-up to The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue Forum, which will take place in Arkhangelsk this March. For us, it was an honour to demonstrate to our colleagues and partners from AEC the level of importance Russia attaches to developing projects in the Arctic.”
