Student internship starts at ‘Independence‘ floating storage and regasification unit in Klaipėda

AB Klaipėdos nafta (KN), operator of oil and liquefied natural gas terminals, Hoegh LNG Klaipėda, the Lithuanian Maritime Academy, and two selected students concluded cooperation agreements on technology internships at ‘Independence‘ floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU).

KN says two students of the Lithuanian Maritime Academy, Agnė Putriūtė and Dmitri Bogačenko, will be the first to complete a unique internship at ‘Independence’ FSRU. The students have been selected for the internship on the basis of their study achievements, after interviews aimed at evaluating their motivation for the FSRU internship. Agnė Putriūtė and Dmitri Bogačenko are studying under programmes ‘Operation of Ships’ Energy Equipment’ and ‘Operation of Ships’ Electrical Equipment’ respectively. The internship starts today and will end on 6 August 2017.

The agreements following the signature of a document by the two companies and the educational establishment on 9 August 2016, which provides for cooperation in order to enable maritime students to complete technical internship at the FSRU.

‘Training and developing LNG competences is one of the priorities of the company, and we do this by, first of all, participating in the LNG cluster’s activities. Now we have taken another quality step together with our partners toward the mastering and adapting the LNG know-how in Lithuania. This is a very specific area, and our country has little expertise in it yet, so increasing scientific potential and training specialists for the growing LNG market is very important’, says Mindaugas Jusius, KN’s CEO.

In the opinion of Viktoras Senčila, Director of the Lithuanian Maritime Academy, the internship should provide the students with valuable knowledge and skills for the operation of sophisticated FSRU equipment.

According to the students, while the signing of the agreements was a very exciting moment, this also means great responsibility. ‘Prior to deciding on this internship, I analysed a large number of internship offers, and have concluded that ‘Independence’ FSRU offers best opportunities. So taking the final decision was not hard. Now it is important to assimilate new information and practical skills that this internship provides’, says Dmitri Bogačenko.
