Until 2025, the Russian Defence Ministry intends to modernise the Pacific Fleet’s four project 949 ‘Antey’ nuclear-powered submarines by means of their arming with ‘Kalibr’ missiles, press center of RF Defence Ministry cites Deputy Defence Minister Yury Borisov.

"Their repair is planned with modernisation: the old ‘Granit’ missiles will be replaced with ‘Kalibr’ ones, which proved themselves well, including in the Syrian conflict," said the military department’s deputy head during his visit to the Far East plant ‘Zvezda’. "In addition, a part of the ship's equipment will be replaced and, in fact, the submarine in her old hull will have new qualities."

"This is used in the current and planned in the next state armaments programme," specified Yury Borisov. "Now the submarine ‘Irkutsk’ is being modernised, in 2021 it will go out. We are discussing now plans to modernise three more boats according to future state armament programme for 2018-2025."

According to Borisov, today the plant is being updated, in particular, a new crane complex is being installed.

"The plant will build a whole galaxy of ships, including for developing the northern shelf. And it needs gas carriers and other auxiliary vessels. We also have plans to use the new capabilities of the plant for constructing large-capacity vessels for the Defence Ministry’s auxiliary fleet," added Yury Borisov.
