Cargo traffic at Latvia's Port of Liepaja climbed by 24.7% to 2.89 mln t in 5M’17
Freight volume handled in the Port of Liepaja, Latvia in January-May 2017 climbed by 24.7%, year-on-year, to 2,890,500 mln t, the Port Authority says.
In the reporting period, transshipment of coal surged 6 times to 723,400 t, wood pellets – up 2.2 times to 150,700 t, construction materials – up 7.8% to 222,600 t, oil products – up 65.6% to 187,900 t, grain – down 11.4% to 1,045,800 t, timber – down 9.6% to 142,600 t.
Container traffic grew 1.7 times to 1,657 TEUs, Ro-Ro – up 5% to 13,308 units.
Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90s of last century at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Liepaja ranks third port of Latvia by handled cargo volume. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2016, throughput of Liepaja port was 5.68 million tonnes.
