RF Navy will take delivery of two Varshavyanka submarines (Project 636) by the end of 2020
Two Project 636 ‘Varshavyanka’ diesel-electric submarines ‘Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky’ and ‘Volkhov’ will replenish the strength of the Russian Navy by the end of 2020 in case of successful mooring, plant and state tests, says press center of RF Defence Ministry. They were laid down in St. Petersburg on the eve of the Russian Navy’s Day.
Project 636 submarines are considered as the most low-noise domestic submarines. For their unique quietness they received the NATO codification “Black Hole”.
Project 636 ‘Varshavianka’ submarines have modern complexes of radar equipment, signal communications, hydro-acoustic stations, 533-mm torpedo tubes and ‘Kalibr’ cruise missiles.
Over the past few years, the Russian Navy’s strength has been already replenished with six Project 636 diesel-electric submarines, built by JSC ‘Admiralteyskiye Verfi’ for the Black Sea Fleet. In May and June 2017, this series’ submarine ‘Krasnodar’ made successful combat launches of ‘Kalibr’ cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea against ground facilities of the terrorist organisation ISIS (prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation).
