DPA reports record handling rate in 2016- 2017 in August

Damietta Port hit a new record last August where cargo handling volume  increased by 40%  from 2.5 million tons in August 2016 to 3.5 million tons in August 2017, Damietta Port Authority said Monday in a press release.

This is the highest monthly rate achieved over the past two years 2016 – 2017 according to the monthly statement issued by DP Information Center  which pointed out to a significant increase in the number of handled TEUs by 85% in August 2017 compared by August  2016.

The statement pointed out that the port of Damietta recieved 248 ships in August 2017compared to 200 vessels the same month last year.

Chairman of Damietta Port Adm aAyman saleh declared that the new record came due to significant efforts exerted by Damietta port Authority to attract more shipping lines to the port.

Damietta port is one of the oldest ports in Egypt. It dates back to the Pharaonic era. The French campaign found pharaonic remains in damietta which were transported to the ( louver ) museum. The construction of new damietta port began in may 1982. on 28th October, 1982, the first vessel arrived at damietta port carrying 3400 tons of sheet piles from Saint Luis in France.
