Vostochny Port starts regular monitoring of background radiation

JSC “Vostochny Port” says it has set up to weekly controls over the compliance on radiation safety norms within the company premises through its industrial and ecological monitoring program. By now, no above-limit values have been recorded.

“Due to the current situation in the Asia Pacific Region, the management of “Vostochny Port” and “Managing Port Company” decided to introduce additional environmental monitoring parameters and to tighten the laboratory control. As of today, background radiation at the Coal Handling Terminal shall be within 12 mcR/h, which is consistent with the norm”, comments Victoria Arsentyeva, Ecology Department Manager of JSC “Vostochny Port”.

Measuring natural radioactivity background, sampling the atmospheric air, industrial waters and waters in the Vrangel Bay are conducted by the in-house accredited laboratory of “Vostochny Port”. Gamma radiation sources are detected and localized, and their power is measured with the use of high resolution survey dosimeter ДРС-РМ1401.

The shift to continuous radiation survey mode is occasioned by multiple nuclear-weapon tests performed by DPRK.
