In the past five years, during Arctic expeditions of the Navigation and Oceanography Department of the Russian Ministry of Defense have opened 11 islands and six straits in the Arctic seas, the Ministry of Defense said.
The newly discovered geographic objects are located in the area of the archipelagos Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land.
"Over the past five years, we have made more than 25 long voyages on our oceanographic research vessels, discovered 11 islands, six straits, nine capes and five bays. All this is confirmed and plotted on navigational charts," the head of the department, Cap. 1 rank Sergey Travin said on the sidelines of the celebrations timed to the 190th anniversary of the department.
