Winter passenger navigation on the Moskva river starts on November 9
Winter passenger navigation on the Moskva river starts on 9 November 2017 at 11:00, Moscow time. According to the official website of Moscow government, first ice-class passenger ships will leave from the Ukraina Hotel on the Taras Shevchenko embankment.
According to the statement, with their special design the ships are able to move in waters covered by light ice and even break ice of up to 20 cm thick. If the ice is thicker the ships are assisted by icebreakers or move along the prepared passage. 10 passenger ships of this type will operate on the Moskva river between November and April.
“We expect that Moscow will be visited by 21 mln tourists in 2017. Round-the-year navigation on the Moskva river is yet another opportunity for citizens and tourists to see the city’s main sights at a different angle in any season”, says Nikolai Gulyayev, head of Moscow Department for Sport and Tourism.
In winter, vessels will leave from two berths – Ukraina Hotel and Gorki Part. During the water tour the passengers will see the Luzhniki stadium, the Vorobyovy Gory park, the Peter I monument, Saint Basil's Cathedral, the Kotelnicheskaya embankment skyscraper, the Kremlin and the Zaryadye park.
Last year’s winter navigation season on the Moskva river started in late October. Summer navigation season opened on April 24 at the Northern river terminal. It was the day when M/V Mikhail Bulgakov left for the maiden voyage. About 150 ships were involved during the summer season.
