It will take 7 years to build a Leader-type icebreaker with the construction cost estimated at some RUB 78.4 bln, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Elena Kvasnikova, head of the Division for Strategic Planning and Management, Department for Shipbuilding Industry and Marine Equipment, RF Ministry of Industry and Trade, as saying at the VII International Forum “Arctic: Today and the Future”.
According to her, three icebreakers of this type can be built first.
Aleksey Kadilov, Director General of Baltiysky Zavod shipyard said in his turn that the shipyard is considering three alternatives of building the icebreaker: with the construction of a special dock, with the manufacture of blocks for further transportation to Severnaya Verf shipyard which is undergoing modernization, or through building on the slipways. Each of the alternatives has certain advantages and disadvantages.
Zalliv shipyard in Crimea and Zvezda shipyard in the Primorsky territory can also be considered for construction of such an icebreaker. However, the first one does not have facilities for construction of nuclear-powered ships, the second one will face challenges associated with logistics.
The work on designing the icebreaker is underway at Krylov State Research Center in cooperation with domestic design organizations.
