Kerch-Yenikalsky canal transit up 25.4% to 19,034 passages in 2017 (photo)

In January-December 2017, the number of transit passages through the Kerch-Yenikalsky canal totaled 19,034, which is 25.4% more than in 2016. According to press center of Federal Marine and River Transport Agency (Rosmorrechflot) it is a record high result from 2014.

Transit from the Azov Sea to the Black Sea accounts for almost 55% of the total number. More than 11,000 vessels which passed through the Kerch-Yenikalsky canal in 2017 fly the flag of the Russian Federation. Then come the vessels under the flags of Panama (1,342) and Malta (1,316).

Cargo transit through the Kerch-Yenikalsky canal exceeded 44.8 mln t with grain totaling 18.247 mln t, coal – 6.387 mln t, crude oil and oil products – 5.850 mln t, metal – 5.884 mln t.

The Kerch-Yenikalsky canal is a navigational route between the Azov and Black seas. Russian ports in the Azov Sea: Taganrog, Temryuk, Kavkaz, Yeisk, Azov, Rostov-on-Don; Ukrainian ports – Mariupol and Berdyansk. The canal is 120 meters long with design depth of 9.35 m. According to the regulations, navigation through the canal is allowed for vessels with length not exceeding 252 m and draft of 8 m maximum.
