Vyborg Shipyard launches port icebreaker Ob built for FSUE Atomflot

On 21 June 2018, PAO Vyborg Shipyard (Leningrad Region) launched port icebreaker Ob built for FSUE Atomflot under the Portoflot project, says press center of FSUE Atomflot.

According to Mustafa Kashka, Chief Engineer and First Deputy General Director of FSUE Atomflot, the Ob icebreaker will be the first non-nuclear-powered icebreaker of Atomflot.

“Despite the absence of nuclear power plant, the icebreaker is powerful enough and features exclusive maneuverability that will let it perform the entire scope of works in the Gulf of Ob. The ship is equipped with an innovative propulsion unit”, added Mustafa Kashka.

The icebreaker will be owned and operated by FSUE Atomflot under a package contract on escorting of vessels and servicing of the water area at port Sabetta within the framework of Yamal LNG project. The contract signed in November 2014 covers the period up to December 31, 2040.
Vyborg Shipyard laid down the Ob icebreaker on 27 September 2016.

12 MW icebreaker of Project Aker ARC 124 (ice class Icebreaker7) will be able to operate efficiently in 1.5-meter thick level ice at 2 knots and achieve at a speed of 4 knots in 5-meter thick consolidated brash ice.

Vessel’s characteristics: length – 89.2 m, breadth – 21.9 m; draught – 7.5 m. The power plant consists of three medium-speed main generating sets and a separate harbor generator. Four ice strengthened azimuth propulsion units, each with a shaft output of 3000 kW, provide a bollard pull of 115 tons. With two azimuth propulsion units in the bow and two units in the stern of the vessel, the icebreaker can maneuver efficiently in any direction.

PAO Vyborg Shipyard (part of state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation from 2012) is one of the largest shipbuilding companies of the North-Western Region of Russia. From the date of its foundation in 1948 the Shipyard has built 210 different vessels, 9 offshore drilling rigs and 105 topside modules for fixed offshore platforms with total displacement of over 1,550,000 t.
