Damen presents Arctic shipbuilding at ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ forum

The ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic Forum that kicked off in Saint-Petersburg on 8 April 2019 features a wide exhibition space. The only booth dedicated to Arctic shipbuilding is that of Damen Shipyards Group

In autumn 2018, Damen made a decision to start implementing the project on localization of its manufacture in the Russian Federation. Now the company is set to offer its projects for the Arctic region.

Damen used to work with Russian customers under the project on creation of Russia’s Arctic fleet. The company is involved in construction of multifunctional icebreaking supply vessels of Project IBSV 10022 at Shipbuilding Complex “Zvezda” in Bolshoy Kamen where Far Eastern Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Center (FESRC) and a joint venture of Rosneft and Damen established Zvezda Marine Technologies LLC. The joint venture designs and manages construction of multifunctional supply vessels, ensures technological support of the shipyard, planning and budgeting under the project as well as efficient interaction of Russian engineering center and design department of Damen.

Vadim Akimov, Sales Director of Damen, told IAA PortNews that the booth presents diesel-electric icebreaker RSV Nuyina being built by Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania for an Australian customer. The icebreaker will have features of a scientific research ship. She will be able to break through ice of up to 1.65 meters thick with a sustained speed of 3 knots and maximum speed of 16 knots. Her endurance is up to 90 days.

The icebreaker will have two diesel engines of 19,200 kW and two electric motors of 7,400 kW. The ship is 160.3 meters long.

Besides, Damen is ready to offer to Russian companies SeaXplorer superyachts for both tropical and Arctic waters.

The ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic Forum will last till April 10.
