Year-round navigation on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) will be ensured by 2030, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Aleksey Likhachev, General Director of Rosatom Corporation as saying at the ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ forum being held in Saint-Petersburg.
According to him, the operational life of four nuclear-powered icebreakers has been extended till 2027, three LK-60 icebreakers are to be put into operation in 2020-24 with two more ships of this design to be built by 2030.
Year-round commercial navigation on the Northern Sea Route will become possible with construction of the Leader icebreaker.
The Forum is a key platform for discussing current issues relating to the socioeconomic development of Arctic regions and for developing multi-level, multilateral mechanisms for joint discovery and effective exploitation of the Arctic’s rich natural resource potential.
