BC Ferries board members resign due to new term limits
British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. announces the resignation of three board members, effective May 22, 2019, following the introduction of a newly enacted amendment to the Coastal Ferry Act that sets term limits of board members to a maximum of eight consecutive years.
With these new limits in place, the terms of Chair Donald P. Hayes, P. Geoffrey Plant, and Brian G. Kenning exceed eight years and, as a result, they have tendered their resignations.
“I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr. Hayes, Mr. Plant, and Mr. Kenning for their years of valuable service,” said John Horning, incoming Chair of the Board of Directors, British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. “Their contributions to coastal communities cannot be overstated. During their terms, BC Ferries raised and invested more than $1.5 billion in B.C.’s coastal ferry service, introduced 11 new ships and transformed BC Ferries into a global leader in efficiency and environmental initiatives.”
“The British Columbia Ferry Services board continues to have a highly skilled group of dedicated directors with a diverse mix of backgrounds that reflect the ferry business environment and the people and communities it serves,” stated Sandra Stoddart-Hansen, Chair of the B.C. Ferry Authority Board. The Authority Board is responsible for appointing members to the Board of Directors of BC Ferry Services. She went on to say, “I am confident that the BC Ferry Services board has a depth of appropriate skills, knowledge and prudent business sense that makes for good corporate governance.”
BC Ferries is an independent company providing ferry services on the west coast of British Columbia.
