ABP says Humber has been shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Best Renewable Energy Project or Installation’ category for its rooftop solar initiative on the Port of Goole. Now in its eighth year, the Humber Renewables Awards recognise and celebrate the best of green business on both sides of the river.
A total of 4,341 solar panels were installed by Custom Solar across four warehouses at the port. The work was completed in February this year and compliments another 23,000 m2 installation at the Port of Immingham. During peak times, the installation generates enough clean energy to power the Port of Goole entirely with surplus supplies sold to the National Grid.
ABP Humber Director, Simon Bird, said: “We are committed to becoming one of the biggest corporate solar power producers in the UK. This clever use of space to produce energy at our ports here on the Humber, and the investment we are making in new technologies such as hybrid cranes, all contribute towards running our operations using clean energy.
The Committee on Climate Change has recently published new advice to Government on increasing the ambition of the UK’s climate change targets; recommending that the UK should ‘set and vigorously pursue’ a new net zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050.
Simon continued: “Investment in clean energy is key to ABP Humber – ensuring that we can support our customers businesses long into the future, whilst reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
The £1 million solar installation on the Port of Goole will reduce CO2 by over 450, 000 kilograms each year, which is the equivalent of planting over 20,000 trees.
A team from ABP Humber shall be attending the awards night on the 13th June at the Country Park Inn in Hessle.
