Southern Shipping challenges consortium over Patrick assets
The future of Bass Strait shipping remains uncertain, with the successful bid for Patrick Corporation's Tasmanian business to be challenged in the Victorian Supreme Court.
Southern Shipping is taking the action against the successful consortium, led by north-west businessman Chas Kelly.
Last week Mr Kelly's group bought the Patrick assets for about $42 million, guaranteeing the jobs of 350 workers.
The infrastructure came up for sale last year when Toll was obliged to sell off Patrick's Tasmanian operations as part of a takeover deal.
Bridport-based Southern Shipping has taken issue with the way Mr Kelly's group won the assets.
A directions hearing will go before the Supreme Court of Victoria today.
Depending on the outcome of the litigation, ownership of Patrick's old Tasmanian operations may be handed over to Southern Shipping and their partner West Coast Transport.
