Shenzhen followed with a 14 per cent increase reaching 18.46 million TEU in 2006 trailed by Qingdao at 7.7 million TEU, a rise of 22.1 per cent, making it the third largest port.
The ports of Ningbo and Zhoushan merged last year, resulting in a substantial growth of 36 per cent, totalling 7.06 million TEU.
Guangzhou surpassed Tianjin for the first time to become the first largest port with 6.6 million TEU, also making it the fastest growing in the top 10, with an increase of 41 per cent.
In sixth place came Tianjin with 23.93 per cent growth to 5.95 million TEU. Xiamen ranked the seventh with 4.01 million TEU followed by Dalian with 21.2 per cent growth and a volume of 3.21 million TEU.
Lianyungang ranked the ninth in volume at 1.3 million TEU and a growth rate of 30 per cent. And finally, Zhongshan on the Pearl, which ranked No 10 was the only river port on the list. Its volume climbed 9.06 per cent to 1.17 million TEU in 2006.
