RS reports about Rules Update Conference outcomes

RS reports about Rules Update Conference outcomes. RS Rules Update Conference took place on 18 September 2019 during Neva 2019 international exhibition business programme in St. Petersburg.

About 100 national and international representatives of ship design offices, shipyards, materials and equipment suppliers, leading shipowners, service companies, maritime academies took part in the event.

The event was a part of the RS conference programme on RS Rules update, following up the spring and summer meetings as well as the one of 2018. The programme objective is to encourage an open dialogue between the classification society and other parties of the maritime industry concerned with the aim of enhancement of the RS activities.

The opening speech was delivered by the RS Director General Konstantin Palnikov. He noted that classification rules are one of the essential parts of the maritime industry providing the long-term planning opportunity. The rules, however, require timely updating to meet the demands of our clients. Today, all the amendments of the RS Rules are available online at rs-class.org in the RS Publications section. 

Georgy Bedrik, Head of the RS Planning and Marketing Division presented the RS activities in terms of newbuilding market demand. He was followed by Head of the RS Classification Division Sergey Shishkin who delivered the review of the RS Rules requirements update.

He said that in order to visualise a wide range of ship’s design features more than 20 new class notations have been introduced over the recent 3 years. A capstone of the conference was the introduction of the new distinguishing mark for double-acting ships – DAS. Further, Sergey Shishkin considered the capabilities of the RS new designated software. The multi-level survey under construction control system NewbuildingRS provides RS surveyors with the updated ship status throughout the construction stage. Ship Design module for the management of design documentation under RS review will be accessible for RS clients to track the plan approval process online.

The Conference continued with the highly demanded presentations on the RS Rules development to LNG containment systems by RS LNG Technology Department Principal Specialist Sergey Sotskov and on new principles of marine equipment approval by Head of the RS Industrial Division Alexey Filippov.

The event was closed with a panel discussion. The information received during the exchange of opinions will be analysed in order to further enhance RS activities.
