Nigerian port workers issue 21-day strike notice

The Maritime Workers' Union of Nigeria has given its federal government twenty-one days to carry out the immediate payment of severance benefits to its members who were left out of the last exercise, reported the BBC.
“We give a 21-day ultimatum. At the end of that ultimatum we will not have any alternatives but to withdraw the services of our labour to draw the attention of the government once again,” said union president Anthony Emmanuel yesterday.
Emmanuel also called on the federal government to investigate allegations of unfair labour practises by port terminal operators.
According to Radio Nigeria, the dock workers have alleged that the new port managers were operating in flagrant disregard for the provision of a fair and conducive working environment. They accused the operators of indiscriminate production and undue exploitation of its members.
Emmanuel warned that the payment of severance benefits to some of their members should not be used as an excuse to perpetuate slave labour in the port.
