Preliminary estimates from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) showed Singapore's terminals handled 2.22 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in April compared to 1.96 million TEUs a year ago.
The increase in throughput has been attributed to growing global trade, with the Asian Development Bank projecting a 7.5% rise in global export volumes.
Singapore overtook Hong Kong as the world's busiest container port in 2005, while Shanghai recently overtook Hong Kong as the world's second busiest container port.
Competition from Chinese ports such as Shanghai and Shenzhen have been slowing down Hong Kong's growth.
