Newcastle coal exports fall but congestion eases

Coal exports from Australia’s Newcastle Port fell more than 5% the past week, while the waiting time eased by two days, official port data showed today.
Newcastle port, one of Australia’s largest coal export terminals, saw exports fall by 96,728 tonnes to 1.642m tonnes for the week ended May 14 data from Newcastle Port Corporation (NPC) showed.
The waiting time at the port fell by 1.41 days from a week ago to 25.85 days, while vessel queues were down 7% from the previous week at 63 vessels, a NPC port source said.
Shipbrokers said the vessel queues were an indication of the quota system starting to make an impact on congestion at the port.
"It’s still a wait of more than 20 days and the queues are still long, but the signs are encouraging," a Singapore-based shipbroker said.
