Push for mandatory electronic charts continues

Norwegian classification society DNV claims that if Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) are made mandatory on board ships, the number of groundings is likely to be reduced by a third.
DNV has carried out a study on electronic charts for Denmark, Finland Norway and Sweden in advance the next meeting of the International Maritime Organization’s sub committee on Safety of Navigation.
DNV’s researchers were asked to assess the adequacy of the electronic nautical chart coverage. The main finding in the DNV study is that the coverage of electronic charts in coastal waters is already very good and improving. But DNV is also playing up the results of earlier work indicating a decrease by a third in groundings if electronic charts are used.
