Issue of first tender for Panama Canal expansion

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has embarked on the next step of its Panama Canal expansion project by releasing its first construction project tender.
The construction project tender for dry excavation along the north access channel at the Pacific end of the Canal was officially released on May 7.
“We are making history with the release of the first construction project tender. The expansion is moving forward with great progress,” said ACP engineering and programmes management director Jorge L. Quijano.
The North Pacific channel excavation is the first of five dry excavation projects that will link the new post-Panamax locks at the Pacific end of the Canal to the existing Gaillard Cut.
This first tender represents 16% of the total excavation required for the new Pacific Locks Access Channel.
“We hope to attract firms with significant experience in this type of work as we begin this important phase of the project,” said Quijano.
Interested parties have until July 1 to submit their bids and the ACP is expected to award the contract in July or August 2007.
